Community Solar Members typically subscribe to a portion of the energy generated by a solar array at an offsite location, and receive an electric bill credit for electricity generated by their share of the community solar system.
Community Solar is a great option for people who are unable to install solar panels on their roofs because they are renters, or home owners that want to avoid the expense of installing solar panels, or because their business rents space but pays for electricity every month.
Community Solar is rapidly growing across the country. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
Community Distributed Generation (CDG)
The CEF makes community solar accessible to a broader range of customers, including those who might not otherwise benefit from clean energy.
This funding also supports New York State’s larger goals of cutting carbon emissions and a more sustainable, renewable energy system.
In short, the CEF serves as the financial engine behind community solar—making these projects possible and expanding their reach to more communities.
N.Y. Public Service Commission Expands Community Solar/ Community Distributed Generation
~ The New York Public Service Commission (PSC) adopted a Clean Energy Standard (CES) in August 2016, instituting a timeline for the load serving entities* (LSE) a.k.a. Utility Companies, in the state to procure at least 50% of the electricity consumed in the state from renewable energy resource.
~ In 2020, the CES was expanded to meet the Climate Act's requirements, which set a goal of achieving 70% renewablys by 2030.
~ New York’s Clean Energy Standard (CES) is designed to fight climate change, reduce harmful air pollution, and ensure a diverse and reliable low carbon energy supply.
~ CES is proceeding on a Motion of the NYS Public Service Commission to Implement a Large-Scale Renewable Program and a Clean Energy Standard.
~ Large Scale Renewables include, Land Based Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Panels, Land Based Wind and Off-Shore Wind turbines.
~ The Public Service Commission regulates and oversees the electric, gas, water, and communication industries in New York as part of the Department of Public Service.

~ The U.S. Department of Energy defines community solar as any solar project or purchasing program, within a geographic area, in which the benefits flow to multiple customers such as individuals, businesses, nonprofits, and other groups.
~ The (DOE) is a federal agency that aims to promote the country's energy, environmental, and nuclear security through science and technology.

NYSERDA; helps New Yorkers reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, save money, and use renewable energy.
~ Community Distributed Generation (CDG), also known as community solar, is a way for utility customers to subscribe to renewable energy projects in their area and receive credits transferred from the solar farm to their electricity bill guaranteeing them a monthly savings.
~ Subscribers "share the profits" (profits = CDG bill credits) from the electricity being generated from the projects solar panels and sold to the power grid.
~ The CDG credits are distributed evenly and show up as a community distributed generation credits on members monthly electricity bills.
~ New York's electricity regulator separated the "right to claim" to be using solar electricity from community solar. This allows the utility to pay more for the electricity, which means that community solar customers get more savings on their electric bill.
~ The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) provides information and analysis, funding, and programs to help New Yorkers reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, save money, and use renewable energy.

The carbon footprint of electricity refers to the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases emitted during the production of 1 kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity.
The emissions associated with electricity generation vary widely depending on the energy source used. Fossil fuels like coal and natural gas emit high levels of CO2 when burned to produce electricity. Renewable sources like solar and wind have very low emissions.
To quantify emissions, we can use emissions factors which measure the average emissions per kWh for different electricity sources. For example, according to the EPA, the US average electricity emissions factor is 0.857 lbs CO2e per kWh. This means that on average, 0.857 pounds of CO2 equivalent is emitted per kWh of electricity generated in the US.

CDG-Credits Applied Directly to Monthly Bill
Community solar will lower your electric bill and allows you to enjoy the benefits of renewable solar energy.
Each billing cycle, your utility provider applies the community solar "CDG" credit value to your electric utility bill based on your subscription percentage of the solar project’s energy generation.
Your subscription percentage is determined by the community solar provider and is set forth in your agreement with the provider. The 'CDG" credits are the way your Community Solar Farm is allowed to pass the monthly savings on to you.
